Traditional Hindu wedding havan ceremony in Melbourne

A calm, traditional ceremony

Mantras are performed at a calm and considered pace, with clear explanations for the couple and their families where appropriate. The intention is for everyone present — including parents, grandparents and friends from outside the tradition — to be able to follow along and participate meaningfully.

Wedding traditions vary across regions and families. The rituals and order can be tailored during the planning conversation so that the ceremony reflects the families' background.

Languages & guidance

Mantras are recited in Sanskrit. Guidance during each ritual is provided in Hindi and English, so the couple and their families understand the meaning of each step. A rehearsal or pre-event briefing can be arranged if the families would like one.

Main wedding rituals

Kanyadaan

The sacred giving of the bride by her parents, performed with mantras and blessings.

The couple takes the auspicious rounds around the sacred fire, each phera carrying its own meaning and vow.

Saptapadi

The seven steps taken together as the couple makes the seven traditional vows of married life.

Havan
